A houseplant, generally known as a pot plant, potted plant, or an indoor plant, is all the plants that are grown indoors, whether it is indoor or outdoor places like residences and offices. They are used for decorative purposes, air purification, and other reasons.
Choosing Indoor Plants
Whenever we went to the nursery and saw any sale, we easily bought the plant without considering its presence in our houses and offices. After buying the plant it becomes our problem instead of adding beauty to the house and life.
It is normal for everyone, we buy plants based on their appearance. Most of the time we don’t consider our rooms and office temperature, light, and humidity before buying the plant. Here is a detailed guide for you to select the right plants before buying it.
Check the Room Conditions before Choosing Indoor Plants
This is the most important thing before choosing the plants for your house and offices. If you do not consider that, then your effort and money will be in vain. Your window location, light timing, balcony positions, humidity, and where we want to place the plant are the important points you need to check.
Choosing house plant according to the Lighting conditions must be taken care. Most of the Plants need indirect sunlight, some needs the direct sunlight. so, choose the plants according to the light conditions and window positions. If the window location is, in south, west, or east facing the sun then you are lucky.
Temperature should be the other condition you must taken care of. Most of the plant do well in spring and summer when the room temperatures within homes are ideal for plants. But in winter season the plants faces the problem and it is the season for resting of plants. So, you need to move the plant where the sunlight directly comes or you can set the artificial light to provide the proper light to the plants so that the leaves will not drops.
Low Light Plants
There are many house plants which can grow easily and survive in low light conditions. You can buy these type of plants when there is no direct sunlight coming through the window. So, If you are new in the field of indoor plants, you must choose the plants which needs the low light.
Pets
You need to be more careful when you have pets. Cats and dogs love chewing leaves of the indoor plants which may cause the infection, and indigestion. Some indoor plants are mildly toxic and can make your pet seriously sick. So if the plant you wish to buy is toxic to pets then you should avoid it.

Step 1: Choose The Right Place
- You need to choose the Spot before going for buy the plant.
SPACE
- There should be a proper place for the plants.
- Don’t try to squeezing plants between or behind pieces of furniture. This makes it difficult for your plant to breathe.
- Keep at least 6” of space in between your plants and any other furniture.
- Place your plants in a spot with good air circulation, such as near hallways, in front of windows, and on top of tables.
- If there is no windows and little air flow, then choose a simple plant that can survive in this type of environment.
- It’s also a good idea to bring your plants out to a windowed room once in a while to give them a chance to refresh.
HUMIDITY
- Most indoor locations have low humidity due to heating and A/C units that dry out the air.
- It is best to keep your plants away from radiators and A/C units.
- If you wanted to buy the tropical plant (like Bird of Paradise, Cut-leaf Philodendron, Bella Palm). You need to mist them daily for the proper moisture level.
TEMPERATURE
- Temperature is a very important factor in plant wellness.
- Air conditioning causes the soil to dry out more slowly.
- Central or radiant heat causes the soil (and the plant itself) to dry out faster.
- This is another reason why you should keep your plants away from radiators and A/C units.
Step 2: Choose The Right Plants
What Size Plants Should you buy?
- Where should the plant sit? On a table, desk, or window should be shorter.
- Always try to buy a plant of smaller size because they will grow soon.
- Small plants are easy to pick up and move whenever you wanted to.
- Keep in mind the size of things around the plant. The plant should be according to the size of thing. Big plant on Small table and Small plant on big table will not beautify the space.
Table Plants (Maximum Size 2.5 inch tall)
- Always try to keep small plants for your home they are perfect for decorating a table, window and shelf.
- They’re light and easy to move around.
Floor Plants (Size between 2.5 to 5 inch tall)
- Big plants are perfect for offices, seating areas and entrances. These plants are ideal for open spaces and high empty corners. These plants gives statement look to your offices and home.
Level of light Your Home have?
- Check the Light situation of your house and buy the plants according. The health of the plant will suffer.
- Find the exact spot where you want to place your plant.
- Once you figure out the light level for the spot choose the plant.
Bright Light Plants :The Plants needed strong sunlight most of the day.
Medium Light Plants: These plants are perfect for east- or west-facing windows, needs indirect sunlight.
Low Light Plants Low-light plants are your best indoor plants can go in every kind of house where there is no any or minimum light available.
Having Pets
Some of the indoor plants are toxic to animals or human being. So, If you have the pets and children, keep this in the mind before buying the plants.

Watering the Plants
- Over watering or less watering is the common problem of the plants.
- You should check the soil before watering. How often you should water the plant depends on the type of plant you have.
- There are self watering planter present in the market and you can buy.
- Some plants need water weekly, some are daily. Watering cycle is based on the temperature, humidity and light.

Fertilizing the Plants
- As the Plants are in the pots, Then fertilize the plant according to the need of the plants.
- Soil mix should be used, and Proper drainage soil can be used.
- Fertilize the plants in summer and spring season. Plants should not be fertilize in the winter season.
Wiping the Plants
- You should wipe the plant once in a week with a moist paper towel.
- Dust can attract the brown, yellow and Leaves fall. So you need to dust the plant and clean with the moist with paper towel,
Pruning the Plant
- Pruning the plants time to time specially the dead leaves and overgrown stems. Which will help the plant growth and will look fresh & healthy.
Going on Vacation
- Before going on vacation the room temperature is between 69F and 72F.
- You should keep open the internal doors. At least keep some blinds open to give your plants the light which they need to survive.
